So – the deaf are just kinda screwed here, eh? No transcript?
We have this “WOT, NO TRANSCRIPT” discussion about once every six months.
I don’t really want to go back over the old ground again, but here’s the medium-length version:
1. I used to do transcripts. I have to do them myself (dictation software is close to useless on this material, as we’re not dictating, we’re discussing), and as I am not a stenographer, it is a lot, and I mean a LOT of work.
2. One week I forgot. No-one noticed. So I stopped doing them, and no-one said a thing for months and months, until we got a comment about them, albeit more polite than yours.
3. I started doing them again, but as I was still not a stenographer, it was still a lot, and I mean a LOT, of work.
4. Traffic to the transcripts was negligible, so I stopped doing them again, and no-one said a thing for several more months.
Rinse, repeat.
The thing is that the podcasts are meant and made to be listened to, and they simply don’t make good reading when transcribed. That’s why we link to the written articles about the topics we discuss.
So I’m not convinced that people who can’t (or won’t) listen to the Chet Chats are “screwed,” literally or figuratively.
The short version is that the transcripts were a real labour of love that very few people ever asked for (and the reason was almost always so they could save time by skim reading instead of listening), and even fewer ever actually seemed to read.
BTW, are you a hearing impaired person making a purposeful request for a transcript? If so, that makes it a labour of love with clear and unambiguous value, and I shall gladly do one.
But I’m afraid that, from your rhetorical question, I simply can’t tell whether you are asking or carping.
Paul: My severely disabled deaf and partially blind 30-year-old son is profoundly deaf, as is over 5% of the world population according to WHO’s Fact sheet N°300 Updated February 2014. If the OP is part of that 5% community, then I feel it is a fair request. Good podcast btw.
I agree. But [a] he didn’t say that (nor did he phrase the request terribly fairly, though that is just IMO) and [b] we do give links where all the material we discuss is covered in written form.
When I used to do transcripts, I can assure you that their page views were far fewer than 5% of the listener count. And when I stopped, no-one ever said, “Would you mind continuing.” So I formed the opinion I would be justified in not doing them any more. Like I said, it was a LOT of extra work that I used to fit into my own time…
I’m still not sure whether the OP was asking for a transcript or just being rude. (BTW, every 60 Second Security video has closed captions, because those are intended to be watched. So, I do try when I can.)
